This is what my car looked like after my crash on Saturday morning @ Oulton Park.

Full race report (and description of what happened) here!

Thanks to my parents and to my friends who came to see me in my first Ginetta race
View Article  Where have I been hiding?
So some of you guys and girls (not sure I should be calling you my fans? Lol!) have been asking me where i've been hiding lately. The answer is that i've been away testing my car around the UK...

I've done test days at Cadwell (which I already posted about), Snetterton, Silverstone, Croft and Oulton Park. This is to try and prepare myself for my first race - which is this Saturday by the way!! The second race is on Easter Monday.

I was at Croft race circuit yesterday to test the car, meet the team and other drivers, and pick up my new race suit and car decals! Picture below of my new race suit! I will be uploading photos of my newly stickered car shortly (i'll get some taken at Oulton). I only got 2 sessions (1 hour) of testing at Croft due to a new statutory part of the roll cage being fitted during the last 2 sessions ... so will hopefully be re-visiting Croft before the race there in the summer.

Oh and for anyone coming to watch me race who is colour blind... i'm car number 8!

So i'm in, my place has been confirmed and my new race car has been bought! I also have a fantastic support team behind me, Esprit Racing.

So I thought it was about time that I get back out on the track, having not been in a race car since Pembrey!

So my support team arranged a track day at Cadwell Park.

Cadwell Park is in Lincolnshire (4 hours away) so I travelled up the night before. Found it hard to get a good nights sleep due to 3 factors: 1) Excitement 2) A party downstairs and 3) Because I swear the hotel was haunted! (ask me for more info...). So I arrived at the track for 7.30am on Sunday. Having never been to Cadwell Park before it seemed daunting but I was eager to get out there!

Meeting my car for the first time was awesome... it's such a gorgeous sexy car! Stunning in bright red and gold.

At the driver briefing I couldn't fail to notice I seemed to be the only girl racer there! That made me want to prove myself! So there were 3 sighting laps first of all for us to check the circuit and see the conditions. I came back in from the 3 laps pretty scared, I had to sit down for 30 minutes! The track was so windy, narrow and hilly. At some points it is only 1 car wide

After a 30 minute breather I decided to brave the track. I got strapped in and headed out, tentatively... after 30 minutes round the circuit I felt a bit more confident and started to relax. Heading out for the second session, I could really feel my pace picking up and my lines were stronger and more consistent. However, in the last few minutes of the morning session my throttle got stuck. It was either full on or full off... not much use round a twisty track

Fair play to the mechanics, they fixed it as best as they could for the day but it needed a new throttle cable. Apparently it's a known problem with the new Ford engines. So the rest of the day was spent trying to work the throttle but concentrate on perfecting my lines and picking up speed. It's a shame the car wasn't perfect but that is of course why we have 'test' days, especially when the engine is brand new. By 5pm I was shattered and headed off on the 4 hour drive home, promptly collapsing on my bed until 9am Monday morning (yes, I was late for work...).

Next time in the car will be at Snetterton next Thursday for a days work on the set-up of the car. Can't wait, I love Snetterton!

Thank you to a very special person in my life who has been supporting me over the Winter, inspiring me to be positive and optimistic that I would get into the Championship and encouraging my racing.

Also, thanks for the drunken nights out to take my mind off things ;-)

Thanks Si! xxx

View Article  Ginetta Test Day 23/11/07

After a four hour drive, I arrived at Pembrey Circuit in Wales. The test day began with a cold, wet and frosty track and a familiar adrenaline rush as I was shown round the G20. The day was made all the more exciting by the arrival of F1 legend Damon Hill! He was there testing a car himself (not a G20).

My quick review of it would be: Not as quick as a Caterham (1st to 2nd is slower) - we timed my laps and they were a few seconds off from my lap times in July in the 7's at the track. Less twitchy than a 7. "Lazy" but comfortable driving position. Steering responsive and smooth. We tested a few different tyres and it really made a difference so bear that in mind if you drive one. The interior is very spacious. The dash is very basic, there are very few controls and a random huge amber light for ignition engage. I felt quite protected even though the shell is only fibre-glass. It looks good - quite retro.

The pedals and steering etc are all inter-changeable so you can tweak the cars a little to how you like it set-up. I got to drive 2 different G20's and the first was not great to drive due to the tyres and the pedal set-up, but the second was fantastic!

So basically in conclusion it's not dis-similar to a Caterham but it is unique and I really loved driving it. I'll be putting my name down for the championship next year!

As far as finances go... All the brand new 2008 Ginetta G20 cars have been sold but they do have some second hand ones for sale. As for mechanical support etc, there are a few teams that can support you but the prices are steep. If you buy a car for 12k (ish), i'll need to put aside about 20k for full 2008 season race team support. So i'm on the hunt for a mechanic of my own!!

The next level up from a G20 is a G50 (below). £40,000 worth of pure racing car...

Well I said I would let you know when i'd booked a test drive in a car...

I've booked a test day at Pembrey Circuit (Wales) next Friday (23rd November). I will get to drive a Ginetta G20 (pictured below). If I like the car then there is a Ginetta Championship next year which I am
very interested in entering. You buy the car newly built and then you race it in 18 races across 9 rounds. Hopefully all will go well and i'll love it!! Ginetta's (www.ginettacars.com) are robust and respected British built cars, well known for being brilliant track cars. Watch this space!

I'd just like to post a great big thank you to all of my friends and family who came to support my racing this year.

I really appreciate the support. It's not often we get to fulfill our dreams. THANK YOU!!!

View Article  Brands Hatch & Final Championship Standings

So if you have read the race reports on my website, you will know I had a rather dramatic weekend's racing at Brands!
But I am on the mend now and my back is much better.

I was so close to my first podium on the Sunday's race... so close!! It was within my reach... but I lost grip on the brake pedal at Druid's and dropped back 2 places after a visit to the gravel. Completely gutted.

But... I had a great weekend and ended up being 9th in the Championship standings. I am pleased with 9th, but I know I can do much better! I can't wait to give it another go next year against the men!

I was (of course) well enough to go to Stockholm with my friends on Friday for 3 days. If you haven't been there, i'd recommend it as a great city break. It even snowed :)

I'm currently trying to arrange some test days so I can decide what I want to race next year. I'll post more info when I have it!

View Article  My bad Monday Morning...

Let me just give you a little bit of background here. I sold my Mercedes SLK as I needed the money for my racing. Bought an old M3 to replace it. The M3 got car-jacked from me and when it was returned (I had a tracker installed) I didn't want to drive it anymore. So I sold it. Paid off my credit card and spent the rest of the money on my racing gear (helmet, race suit, training fees etc). So ever since I sold my car I have been borrowing my dad's 1999 Volvo V40. Which is very nice of him and actually a very nice car to drive. Except for when you put your foot flat to the floor and the steering wheel flips to the left... but that's another story. I drop my dad off at the station (he works in London) each morning and pick him up in the evening.

So now that you know the 'car situation' background, I can tell you what went wrong with my Monday morning...

Dropped my dad off at the station as usual and was heading back home to pick up my laptop when I got a phone call. So I pulled over in a dead end part at the end of my road to take the call. Turned the engine off. When I tried to re-start it, nothing… so I walked home. Figured I’d leave it for half an hour and try again. But nothing. Phoned RAC but as it was classified as a 'home start' they would not be able to attend for a few hours. It was already approaching 10am and I had a meeting at work at 10am...

So I had a bright idea to use my dad’s classic car (Volvo 122 Amazon) to jump start it. Got the garage open, the classic car started using the choke, and the car backed out (this took about half an hour)… I'd never driven this Volvo before so it was all new to me but figured I was only going down the road so it would be ok. pulled up infront of the V40 and the classic car conked out! Now I was in a dilemma... I looked around for inspiration...

So had to ask 2 builders if I could borrow them and their van to help jump start the cars… they said yes (thankfully!) and stopped their work to help me out. We got the V40 started after 30 mins charging it and I drove it home then ran back.

Next we tried to start the classic car. But we couldn’t get the classic one started. So we pushed it up to the top of the hill (it's blimmin heavy) so I could roll it home. But it wasn’t rolling very well when we got to the top so I had to push it on my own for a bit and finally I sat in it and wondered what to do as it was still a few mins walk from home. I decided to give it one last try... and it started. Drove it down the road, opened up the garage etc...

But when I was putting it into the garage I hit my head on the door surround and got concussion. All of this took from 8am until 12pm! I got to work at 2pm, just in time for the end of the meeting I was supposed to attend...

I have a lovely attractive lump on my forehead today...!

I can't fail to notice that as us girls progress through the competition, some inevitable bitchiness has crept in! People can't understand how the top girls are so much faster and think their cars have been tampered with... which is definitely not true.

Formula Woman is supposed to be a championship for novice racing drivers, to give women who have never had the chance to race an opportunity to be 'discovered'.

But from talking to the other girls and looking at their profiles I can see that I am in fact one of the few complete beginners in the championship. I had never driven a race car until the competition began in April! At least 70% of the other girls have raced in some sort of novice championship before, or had training from professionals. The top 2 girls in the championship are fantastic karters, for example. I am not bitter about this, it does help me feel better in fact - as I know I was only 2 seconds off the leaders pace at the last race. Each race I have competed in, I improve. I find strength in the fact that I have had on-track battles against more experienced drivers and I have been able to hold my own.

So I will listen patiently to anyone who wishes to vent anger about the competition, but it won't help anyone. What helps is taking the time to analyse the situation and see that although the top drivers are consistently having successful races and podiums, I am slowly creeping up and improving and with practice who knows, I could even beat them!

I  have spent some time lately designing a new logo. Let me know what you think as there is always room for improvement!

The logo with the chequered flag is for the website, and the logo without the flag is for stickers etc.

View Article  Me and my foot...
Thought i'd give an update on the plantar fasciitis situation!

It was extremely painful at testing on Friday at Silverstone. So much so that another Formula Woman team member Tracy Dixon offered to take me to her chiropractor clinic after the days racing. So we headed into Northampton and she worked her magic on my foot with some gel and an ultrasound machine.

I stayed the night in a b&b, but not after stopping at Waitrose to buy some frozen peas to try and keep the swelling of my foot down

I awoke on the 29th to discover my foot was feeling so much better and I could walk on it! Thank goodness! I took the peas with me to the track and iced them after each excursion in the car and found my foot was ok. Towards the end of the day it was getting more painful and I found I had difficulty performing a race start in the 2nd race - which was unfortunate as I was 5th on the grid  But I still managed to finish 8th so i'm happy with that.

Well my car has a new gearbox, new brakes and new tyres!! About time too after the gearbox going at Snetterton and losing me so many points... Fingers crossed the car will stay in one piece for Brandshatch!
View Article  Disaster strikes...
Had a great weekend hiking in Cornwall but it has cost me dear - The doctor confirmed today that I have plantar fasciitis in my left foot! This is not good news considering the Silverstone weekend is only 2 days away!

In case you're wondering what plantar fasciitis is, it's the inflammation of the tissue which runs from your toe to the middle of your foot. It's very painful and nothing I seem to try works to help the pain!

I am due in London tomorrow for meetings for work, that's going to be interesting...!
View Article  Boot Camp...
Well it didn't start off well with my having got my hotel bookings muddled up and having nowhere to stay... lol. I ended up in Swansea at a holiday inn!

We got to the track (right in the middle of nowhere) bright and early and full of nerves!

Day 1 consisted of a fitness test, media test (talking to the pretend press), car control test (sliding the car round a course), brake resistance test (steering the car round obstacles after heavy braking) and circuit driving.

Points were allocated for each of the tests and the 68 lowest scorers were to be sent home at the end of Day 1.
I felt I had done well actually but the shock of getting through at the end of the first day still hit me and I started bawling like a baby ;-)

Day 2 the scores were swept clean and consisted of a karting race and then timed laps in the Caterham on the circuit. Points were awarded for race-craft in the karts and for the quickest timed laps on the track. At 6pm on Day 2 the final 16 were to be announced, plus 4 reserves. The TV cameras were on us as the drivers were called forwards. I was in a delirious state of dreaminess as I was called up... I was completely floating on air! I just couldn't believe I had been chosen. All of the journey home I phoned friends and family to tell them my news but it didn't really hit me until today...

But... i've done it!!! I'm one of the top 16 female drivers in the UK... i'm in the championship!!!
View Article  I've only gone and done it...!

Well, i'm in! I can't believe it! I actually got through to boot camp of the Formula Woman competition... it's action stations all around now as I continue my fitness training and attempt to sell my car... (I have no money for the training days, need to free up some funds!)

If you know anyone who wants a Mercedes SLK 320 (2001) in silver then let me know... I need to sell it to fund my future...

I'M IN!!!! WOO!!! I can't describe the elation right now!

View Article  Formula Woman Assessments

Yesterday was the second round of Formula Woman 2007 (http://www.formulawoman.com). I attended the AM session at Brandshatch. Which meant I had to get up at 5.30am... but I didn't mind Got there at 7.30 and signed on at 8am.

There were 40 of us there and split into 4 groups to do the following tasks:

1. Caterham driving, where instructors will be looking for natural talent and car control skills as opposed to out right speed at this stage. Three laps under instruction and then 2 assessed laps.
2. A basic fitness test
3. A written test covering general motorsport knowledge
4. A karting assessment
5. A 2 minute talk in front of a journalist on why I deserve a place in the Formula Woman Championship.

It was a tough morning! But I think I did ok...

Not so good on the written test... My mind went blank for the written test so I know I didn't do great on that. But hey, there is always room for improvement - if my driving was good enough they can help me advance my knowledge, right? Um...

But God I HATE bleep tests. Takes me back to nightmares of my schooldays. But I wasn't the first to drop out so that's something I suppose! I was a bit annoyed at myself for not staying in long enough. I just have my own pace I run at and the bleep test soon got too quick for me!

I had never been karting before and that was great fun actually, really enjoyed it We had a few practice laps and then a few races. Managed to overtake some people so that was good! Only spun once ;-)

The driving of the Caterham accounted for the most points and this was difficult as it was driving round the cones in the paddock. Quite tricky and you only get about 7 minutes in total! Eeek! But I didn't spin, I didn't knock any cones over and the driver didn't shout at me. So can't have been too shabby! We were told not to go fast but to concentrate on car control. There was a great little slalom we had to go through, was loving it and didn't want to get out of the car when it was all over way too soon.

The talk with the journalist was quite funny, I blabbered on a bit to the poor guy... no problems there!

We don't find out the results until Mid-May. I'll update you then - only 100 get through to the next round (boot-camp). So I have a 1 in 5 chance! If I don't get in this year then dammit I will try again, and again... I did as well as I could. If that's not enough then I need to work harder obviously!

Thinking of buying a Caterham, they are a dream to drive... then I could take it on trackdays! My mind wanders...

View Article  Training!
Yesterday (April 18th), I went to Brandshatch and did my favourite thing all day... I drove a Caterham 7 round the track with an instructor. It was in training for the assessment on May the 2nd but also a fun day out for me, a bit of a birthday treat! Infact one of the most fun days out i've ever had!

I must have driven for about 4 hours and today I am aching all over... but I don't mind at all because it was worth it! I also got my feedback today over email from my instructor. I got really good marks and am in a GREAT mood!

P.S: I LOVE CATERHAMS!!!
View Article  Formula Woman - Assessment Acceptance!

Today I got an email confirming my acceptance (out of 1300 applicants) into the Formula woman 2007 Competition! Woohoo. Here's a quick description of what the competition entails:

Formula Woman is a unique concept designed to attract and assist more women to enter the previously male-dominated arena of motor sport and is the only female motor racing Championship in the country. Over the past 3 years there have been over 15,000 entrants to the Formula Woman competition and television programmes on ITV 1, Channel 4 and Sky Motors TV.

500 women including myself have made it through the preliminary rounds and have been chosen to attend an assessment in April. If I am successful in April I will join the final 100 who will attend an elimination round in June, where the lucky 16 will be chosen to race in the 2007 Novice Championship. The top three drivers will obtain a free season in the Novice Championship and the other 13 will be required to find sponsorship. I am determined that I will make it into the final 16 and I am confident that I can secure one of the three scholarship drives available. I have already proven that I have good car control and speed on track during training sessions.

The Formula Woman Novice Championship will run over 8 races throughout the summer of 2007, at circuits throughout the UK including Brands Hatch, Snetterton and home of the British Grand prix – Silverstone. If I get through to the final 16 I will be racing a 1.6 K series Rover engined Caterham 7.

I'll update you again shortly! This could be the start of something BIG!
